Scroll Down to See Pictures Showing My Hair Loss and Regrowth
I am now 33. My hair loss problem began several years ago. I assumed it would stop at some point.
I was very wrong
Hair loss is precisely like so many other problems: It accelerates and gets worse if it is not treated. It does not get better on its own.
|
By the Winter of 2002:
Every morning: I woke up with hairs on my pillow.
During the daytime: I could not casually run my hands throughout my hair without pulling out some hairs.
If you have experienced drastic hair loss, then you know exactly what I am talking about. I realized that I needed to do something.
|
On May 17, 2003, I set up a hair-transplant surgery consultation with one of the U.S.'s most renowned hair transplant surgeons.
By the time of my consultation, I had already lost much of the hair on the top (crown) of my head, and I was continuing to lose the hair in the frontal region of my head as well.
To the right is an excerpt from the medical report that was sent to me after my original consultation (Hard copy available upon request)
Note: I have chosen to show you these reports because pictures of hair loss/regrowth that appear on TV ads and in print (without accompanying medical reports) can be deceptive. Today, any picture can be digitally changed using Photoshop or another graphical editing tool. Brighter/darker lighting can also make a world of difference. Wet hair looks thinner than dry hair. There are hundreds of tricks that can be used to make it seem like someone regrew hair. I want to show you what actually happened to me.

CONSULT REPORT
Consult Date: May 17, 2003
YOUR HAIR CHARACTERISTICS
Pattern of Loss
Age.........................30
Class of Hair Loss....Class 3v
Color
Hair........................ Brown
Skin........................ Fair
Character
Wave....................... Curly
Thickness................. Medium coarse
Density
Donor Site............... (180 cm. average)
Follicular Units......... (80 average)
Scalp Laxity............. Average
Summary: Your hair loss pattern is presently a Class 3v. Exacting work is required because of the contrast between your Brown hair color and Fair skin tones. Your Curly hair will typically produce more fullness than if it were straight, and its Medium coarse character gives more coverage value to each hair than if it were fine.
ANTICIPATED SURGERY
Goal: You desire that we work to increase density in your frontal area. Since expectations and actual results may vary from person to person, the ability to achieve your specific goals in one or more sessions cannot be accurately predicted. As your hair loss progresses, additional work may be needed. Your goals should be realistic and your expectations reasonable; this will provide the best results.
Plan: A natural looking frontal hairline can be produced by the delicate placement of single hairs, followed by two, three, and possibly four hair follicular units (depending upon your density and hair groupings). I believe that **1000-1500** grafts would be appropriate for this procedure, but the actual number harvested could vary from this estimate. All of the hair will be harvested and implanted in naturally occurring groups for the best cosmetic result. At the time of the surgery, the surgeon may find he can move more hair safely, so if you elect to keep the size of the session open ended, then a higher number of grafts should be budgeted.
As an alternative you may elect to have fewer transplants in your first session. By decreasing the number of transplants and either spreading them out with less density or concentrating on a more limited area you can reduce the cost of your first procedure significantly, achieve satisfactory results and plan a second session at a later time.
For example, you may transplant 500 follicular units in the first session, (confining work to the front ), and reassess your need for more transplants when your hair has grown to styling length (this takes six to eight months for most people). We will schedule you to be evaluated during this period.

The changes in my hairline from 2002-2003
August 2002 in Manhattan (Riverside Park)
I am on the left.
This is the last picture that I have of myself when I still brushed my hair back.
July 16, 2003 (From my birthday party at Hooters almost one year later)
Note the hair loss in the front.
The report above describes my hair loss around this time.
As you will see, my hair condition got even worse!

Before deciding what to do next: I did additional research. I spoke with a number of people who had gotten hair transplants. I also corresponded with several other doctors, including the team doctor of the New York Mets.
Everyone told me the same thing: Avoid Getting A Transplant If At All Possible! One doctor told me that he never saw a good long-term transplant in his entire life.
Hair transplants leave scars. Follow-up transplants are often needed in an attempt to cover up the scarring. Furthermore, transplanted hairs fall out over time, just like ordinary hairs.
(To learn more about what can go wrong with transplants, see: www.bosleymedicalviolations.com. It deals with the Bosley Medical Institute that you see on TV)
I wanted a long-term solution, not a questionable short-term cosmetic fix. As a result, I held off on getting a transplant. But as my hair loss continued to get worse, I didn't know if I had any other options.
I decided to get another medical opinion. So I found the two doctors who are considered to be the best hair transplant surgeons in the world. One works at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and the other works out of Manhattan.
In January 2004, almost a year after the consultation shown above, I went to see the doctor located in Manhattan.

The following is a portion of the medical report that was sent to me after my consultation in January 2004 (Hard copy available upon request)
YOUR HAIR CHARACTERISTICS
Pattern of Loss
Age......................... 31
Present.................... Class 5
Possible.................. Class 6
Color
Hair......................... Brown
Skin......................... Fair/Medium
Character
Wave....................... Wavy
Density
Donor Site............... 1.4/mm2 (2.1 is average)
Scalp Laxity................. Slightly Tight
Forehead Width........... Average

As you can see from comparing the two reports: My "class" of hair loss plummeted from a Class 3V in October 2003 to a Class 5 in January, 2004. Clearly, my hair loss problems were rapidly getting worse.
The second hair transplant surgeon further explained that I was not an ideal candidate for a hair transplant - even if I wanted one: If you examine my score for "Donor Site" density in the report above, you will see that I have a significantly below-average number of "donor" hairs in the back of my head to that can be transplanted. If a surgeon transplanted hairs from the back of my head to "fill in" the hairs missing on the crown of my head, there would be few if any donor hairs left to transplant to the frontal region of my head if/when my remaining frontal hairs fell out.

I was now at a critical juncture in my life. I had to do something!
Following this second consultation, I tried literally everything under the sun to regrow my hair.
I succeeded in finding a solution! And I am willing to share my discoveries with you.
My results speak for themselves.
